L-Carnitine, also known as vitamin BT, has the chemical formula C7H15NO3. Its chemical name is (R)-3-carboxy-2-hydroxy-N,N,N-trimethylpropylammonium hydroxide inner salt, and a representative product is L-carnitine.
It is an amino acid that plays a role in energy metabolism. The pure product appears as a white crystal or white transparent fine powder. It is easily soluble in water, ethanol, and methanol, slightly soluble in acetone, and insoluble in ether, benzene, chloroform, and ethyl acetate. L-carnitine is highly hygroscopic, has good water solubility, and remains stable at high temperatures above 200°C. It is non-toxic and safe for human consumption.
Red meat is the primary natural source of L-carnitine, and the human body can also synthesize it to meet physiological needs. Although often referred to as a vitamin-like substance, it is not a true vitamin. As a food additive, L-carnitine is widely used in the food industry for its role in energy metabolism and nutritional enhancement.
